It was an unseasonably warm April evening when Holmes discovered a secret I had been trying hard to conceal from him for the entirety of our acquaintance. Before I continue, let me add that it had now been eighteen months since Holmes and I had begun engaging in carnal acts that would certainly have guaranteed each of us a lengthy occupancy of the cells at Reading Gaol if Scotland Yard had ever got wind of them. Needless to say, we were both perfect models of discretion, each as much out of concern for the other as himself, and life had continued at Baker Street – I will not say uneventfully, as no building that contains Sherlock Holmes and his never-ending chemistry studies can ever be truly uneventful – but it continued in more or less agreeable fashion. The result was that he now knew me, body and soul, as few other people in my life have ever done, and there was very little left to reveal that could possibly have shocked him.

Mrs. Hudson was away for a few days, visiting a relative in Sussex, and had left Holmes and me to fend for ourselves. This was proving to be a very easy task since she had left the larder well-stocked enough to have comfortably provided for the whole of my old regiment let alone two bachelors, one of whom had an appetite that was erratic at best. On this particular evening, Holmes had announced his intention of leaving London for the night to follow up on some details of a case, and that I should not expect him back before the following morning. Therefore I had decided to take the rare opportunity of complete privacy to indulge a furtive pleasure I had had for years.

The truth is that I have a most appalling love of romantic novels. This would be excusable in a young debutante who is largely ignorant about the world and affairs of the heart. Even in the sort of long-haired young man who fancies himself a poet, it may be looked on with a tolerant smile. But in an ex-Army surgeon who has seen much of human cruelty in war, and is now working with a detective dealing in crime of every shade, it is the absolute last thing to which one can confess. Furthermore, any person living with Sherlock Holmes in particular would do better to keep entirely silent on the subject and not indicate such a character flaw by word or deed, unless they have either nerves of steel or a masochistic wish to condemn themselves to endless gibes about the idiocy of filling one's brain-attic with such nonsense.

It is one of the greatest joys of my life to know that Sherlock Holmes is as completely devoted to me as I am to him but, given his already critical comments on the romanticism of my writing, I would rather face a charging lion than admit my unfortunate taste in reading material to him.
